Huang Jin Gui literally means “Golden Turtle”, named for the golden hue of its leaves and the shape that is said to resemble a turtle’s shell. It is one of Anxi’s four famous oolongs, alongside Tie Guan Yin, Ben Shan, and Mao Xie.
This tea is known for its unique aroma and taste, combining a flowery fragrance with natural sweetness and a smooth, full-bodied character.
Region of Origin:
This Huang Jin Gui is grown in Gan De Village, Anxi County, Fujian Province — a place renowned as the heartland of Chinese oolong tea. The village is famous for producing Tie Guan Yin and other celebrated Anxi varietals, with misty mountains, fertile soils, and centuries of tea-making tradition shaping the unique floral and sweet character of this “Golden Turtle” oolong.

Huang Jin Gui is less widely known in the West compared to Tie Guan Yin, yet in Anxi it is highly respected as one of the “Four Famous Oolongs.” Its name sometimes causes confusion: both “Golden Osmanthus” and “Golden Turtle” are pronounced Huang Jin Gui in Mandarin, but written with different characters. This tea is the Golden Turtle (龟) varietal, prized for its elegance and golden-tipped leaves.
Brewing Guide:
Heat water to about 95 °C and use 4–5 g of tea per 100 ml water. Rinse briefly for 10 seconds and discard the wash. Begin with an infusion of 10 seconds, then gradually increase: 15, 20, 30, 45 seconds until about a minute, as the flavour evolves.
For a Western-style cup, use ~2 g of tea per 200 ml water and steep for 2–3 minutes at 95 °C.
